{"id":989,"date":"2016-01-24T23:22:05","date_gmt":"2016-01-24T23:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tastytangents.com\/?p=989"},"modified":"2016-01-24T23:56:45","modified_gmt":"2016-01-24T23:56:45","slug":"antipasto-charcuterie-or-something-else","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tastytangents.com\/?p=989","title":{"rendered":"Antipasto, charcuterie or something else?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div id=\"attachment_990\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tastytangents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/DSC_0001.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-990\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tastytangents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/DSC_0001-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"One of our favourite (but only sometimes) dinner alternatives - an antipasto platter.\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" class=\"size-large wp-image-990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tastytangents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/DSC_0001-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tastytangents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/DSC_0001-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of our favourite (but only sometimes) dinner alternatives &#8211; an antipasto platter.<\/p><\/div>At breakfast with friends on Saturday at the marvelous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theclocktowerbistro\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clock Tower Bistro<\/a> in Strathroy, Ont. an interesting question came up.<\/p>\n<p>What, exactly, is charcuterie?<\/p>\n<p>One of the breakfast options, (which I had on a previous visit) is a yummy charcuterie platter that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholepig.ca\/aspx\/public\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Whole Pig<\/a> cured meats, cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, fruit and toast.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always called that kind of thing an antipasto platter, but the question left me wondering about the real definition of charcuterie.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out charcuterie &#8211; literally cold, cooked meats (mainly pork) &#8211; is only a tiny portion of that particular entree, but all the recommendations I found for charcuterie <strong>platters <\/strong>include cheeses, breads, pickled vegetables and honey or jams as well. <\/p>\n<p>And while we&#8217;re on the subject, there&#8217;s another good term to know that&#8217;s close to my heart &#8211; salumi &#8211; Italian-style cured meats like prosciutto, mortadella, salami and soppressata, which my folks still make annually. <\/p>\n<p>So now that we&#8217;ve learned some new terms, what&#8217;s next?
