While in Niagara on the Lake recently, we stopped in at a little café/shop run by Food TV personality Anna Olson (of ‘Sugar’ and ‘Fresh’) and her husband chef Michael Olson. I have to say, I was super impressed by the selection of locally made food products, everything from tasty jams to vinegars and cheeses. (We did not leave empty handed.) The lunch we had was delicious too, between all of us we tried the crab cakes, turkey and roast beef sandwiches, cream of mushroom soup, shepherd’s pie, and, oh yeah, lemon squares and rocky road squares. The hint of horseradish on the sandwiches was killer, and the fresh lemon squares were super tangy.

And did I mention that the Olson’s were not only working the cash and helping out at the deli counter, but also clearing plates and socializing with all the customers? I may have been a little star-struck, but I have to say it was nice to see a couple who I imagine have a lot of choice when it comes to what to do with their time, choosing to be working. All in all it was a great lunch, and they even signed our new cookbook! Of course, I promise to let you know how the recipes are when I get to trying some of them out.

    I’m just a “little” jealous that you got to meet Anna Olson. Is the cafe hard to find? I love to watch re-runs of her Sugar episodes. It’s a good thing we don’t live closer to the cafe as we would constantly be eating their deserts. It’s nice to know that the Olson’s are so down to earth.
    Have you tried any of her recipes yet? Bon apetit.

    • It’s super easy to find, just off the main road that runs along the Niagara Gorge and a few minutes from the Canada-U.S. bridge. I’ve got a post coming right now on one of the recipes I tried too! (It’s like you were reading my mind.)

  2. I’m excited to be finally posting online after all these years. There really is no mystery about it, is there? I just dropped by your blog and had to write. I’m a recent college grad, journalism major if you must know, and I absolutely love the art of photography. I’ve got my website up but it’s nothing to boast about yet. None of my stuff’s been posted. Soon as I figure out how to do that, I’ll spend the day posting my best shots. anyway just thought I’d drop a line. I hope to return with more substantial stuff, stuff you can actually use. SPG

    I was just at the Ravine , and very disappointed to find out the Olsons are no longer there. Not even a cookbook. The food was still very good and I would recomend it to everyone , a great summer place to go eat.
